History of New Cumberland
New Cumberland was founded in 1750 by immigrants from Germany and Switzerland. The town was laid out by John Coxe, who named it after Cumberland County. The borough was incorporated on February 20, 1814.
During the Revolutionary War, New Cumberland served as an important supply center for the Continental Army. The town was also the site of a prisoner-of-war camp for British soldiers during the War of 1812. In the late 19th century, New Cumberland became a manufacturing center for such products as cigars, stoves, paper products, and textiles.
